La noche era fría, lúgubre y un tanto desoladora.
Un hombre vestido con ropa sucia y rasgada se movía lentamente por las calles de Cherbourg.
Su cara estaba semioculta por una mata de pelo negro que caía pesadamente sobre sus ojos.
Éste se paró delante de un escaparate y observó atentamente a un cliente que salía con un pequeño paquete bajo el brazo.
El hombre se interpuso en el camino del jóven, impidiéndole el paso.
-Perdone caballero, pero tengo prisa. Así que, si no le importa, déjeme pasar.
Hizo un ademán de retirarse, pero el hombre no se lo permitió, ya que le agarró de los brazos.
El jóven elevó el rostro, y con una expresión de terror dijo:
-Cielo santo... ¡Eres Leremönt!
Leremönt asintió, y sacando una pequeña navaja dijo:
-Así es. Ahora, dame el paquete.
El jóven no podía creer todo o que le estaba sucediendo,así que, de un movimiento imprevisto, se liberó de las manos de su captor.
Intentó huir, pero desgraciadamente, unos segundos más tarde, yacía en el suelo con la navaja en el pecho y su cara salpicada de sangre.
Leremönt guardó el arma del crimen y cogió el pesado paquete.
Cuando lo abrió, la cara se le encendió de rabia.
El espejo que había en el interior estaba roto.
